Sketching Dreams into Reality: The Story of The Inked Home

Every story has its beginnings, nestled in the quiet moments of our lives, waiting for the perfect time to emerge and shape our destiny. My story is no different. It’s one woven from the threads of passion, resilience, and a deep-seated love for the spaces we call home. This is the story of The Inked Home - a journey of transforming simplistic sketches into keepsakes cherished by homeowners across Australia.

Unassuming Beginnings: The First Sketch

The seed for The Inked Home was planted not in a grand moment of revelation, but in a humble act of sharing. On July 27th, 2022, I posted sketches of a few houses on a local Facebook page. These were no masterpieces, just sketches I drew for the sheer joy of it while pondering life in Townsville. Amongst those sketches was a quaint little cottage from South Townsville that I had drawn, never intending it to be more than a fragment of my imagination captured on paper.

To my astonishment, my inbox pinged with a message from Brodie Jankovic of Jankovik Property Group, the person who had poured their heart into renovating that very cottage. He wanted to buy my drawing. My initial thought? He must be joking. But he wasn’t. And so, with a blend of surprise and delight, I handed over my sketch, making its way into the heart of the home it depicted. This exchange marked the inadvertent inception of what would become The Inked Home.

A Chance Encounter and A New Beginning

Fast forward to June 2023. The sketches had become little more than a fond memory, a hobby I indulged in between the demands of raising twin girls and navigating life post a significant relationship. During this time, I found myself working as a real estate agent, which, in hindsight, was merely a pitstop on my journey.

Then, a serendipitous trip to Toowoomba changed everything. It was here, in a charming Airbnb cottage located on Taylor Street (seriously?), that the possibility of turning my passion into a career reared its head once more. The suggestion from a newfound friend - “Why don’t you sell these?” - echoed the undervalued potential I hadn’t dared to acknowledge. Why not, indeed?

Taking The Leap

By July 2023, The Inked Home went from a whisper of a dream to a tangible reality. With a basic logo and a fledgling social media presence, I ventured into the world, presenting my art to potential customers. The first real commission, a picturesque Queenslander in Railway Estate, Townsville, was a defining moment. The joy and pride the homeowner expressed upon receiving their commission confirmed a hitherto unspoken belief: my artwork held value, capable of capturing the essence of ‘home’ for others.

This realisation propelled me forward. By the end of July, I had taken a significant leap - resigning from real estate to immerse myself fully in The Inked Home. The journey, albeit daunting, felt right. Coupled with the pursuit of marketing studies and the co-management of a small marketing and design agency, my path was now unequivocally linked to my passion for art and creativity.

An Artistic Legacy

The roots of my artistic journey run deep, tracing back to my father and grandmother. In their sketches and paintings of cottages and landscapes, I found a connection that spanned generations. This legacy, rich in creativity and appreciation for beauty, has been my guide. My work is not just about capturing buildings on paper; it's a homage to the artistic spirit that has been a part of my family for generations.

The Road Ahead

As The Inked Home continues to grow, so does my vision. I see this journey not just as a personal triumph but as an opportunity to contribute to the broader community. Townsville, with its vibrant artist community and historical architecture, provides both inspiration and a canvas for my work. My dream is to not only preserve the architectural heritage of our towns and cities through my art but to also inspire others to see the beauty in the everyday.

The Inked Home is more than a business; it's a heartfelt endeavour that celebrates homes, memories, and the stories that bind us. Each sketch, from the initial outlines to the final touches, is imbued with a sense of place and belonging. As I look back on the journey thus far, I am filled with gratitude for every chance encounter, every word of encouragement, and every sketch that found its way into the heart of someone’s home.

From those first timid steps to the burgeoning path that lies ahead, The Inked Home is a testament to the beauty of following one’s passion. It’s a reminder that sometimes, the most unassuming moments can lead to the most extraordinary journeys. As I continue to sketch, learn, and grow, I am excited for what the future holds, both for The Inked Home and for the wonderful community of homeowners, real estate agents, and Airbnb owners who have embraced my work with such warmth and enthusiasm.
